Salakaadot seis (Stop Poaching) is a campaign by the wolf action group within the Finnish nature activity and environmental protection organization Luonto-Liitto (Finnish Nature League).

Launched in 2008, the aim of the campaign is to fight the poaching of wolves and other large carnivores. The campaign takes a stand for a vital wolf population, and its main message is that the wolf is part of the Finnish nature and it is possible for wolves and people to co-exist in the same areas. Poaching is a very serious and large-scale form of hunting crime that should never be accepted,  silently or otherwise.

Help save the Finnish wolves!

By filling out the fields below you can send the following message to the Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Jari Koskinen. If you wish to write your own message to Minister Koskinen, you can send him an e-mail to the address jari.koskinen(at)mmm.fi.

Here you can read the message translated to English, German and Russian; the writing that will go out is in Finnish.

Dear Minister Koskinen

The wolf is a highly endangered species in Finland. The Finnish wolf population has almost halved from 2007 because of poaching, as also the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry recently admitted.

Because of the poaching problem, all wolf hunting licenses must be frozen. Hunting needs to be monitored more carefully and the police needs to take more decisive action to stop illegal hunting. Moreover, predator damage control and compensation practices need to be modified so that they promote tolerance towards large carnivores.

We need to act now in order to save the Finnish wolf population – there is no time to waste!

Kind regards

Wolves of Finland are critically endangered. I am an advocate for wolves and presently in the Yellowstone National Park area of Montana, USA. I fully support a progressive wolf plan in Finland that is based on science, not politics, and it is important to understand how very important the apex predator(Wolves) are to the Finland ecosystem. IT is so important to return the wolf to a healthy population to realize this goal, and I would suggest consulting with some of the very competent wildlife biologists in your country. Wolves everywhere in the world all face the same obstacles, but you will find the benefits of wolves back in the ecosystem far outweigh the alternative with their absence . I wish you the best and the many people I interact with on my website and FB page wolf watcher are passionate in their support of wolves, and I admire their efforts, efforts that have brought me here to also strongly support the wolves of Finland to be protected and restored to healthy numbers for years to come. Sincerely, Dave Hornoff

  3. Please stop the unnecessary slaughter of Wolves ,they need to left alone to live in peace.

Why is there a need to hunt that which is already endangered?
Is it not enough that whole species are being wiped out the planet over?
Future generations will never know the Wolfsong in all its glory…
    Why?
To that question there is no answer… No rhyme or reason.
Mans need to control and destroy for me is the answer.
Wake up… Its already too late.

I’m not sure what impact a signature from a non-Finnish citizen will have upon your Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, but I signed and included these comments:
“I fear for all the world’s endangered species including the wolves in Findland, as well as the wolves in my own country. The earth is a living organism that is home to us all; and we must all work to keep earth in balance. I emplore you to do your part in Finland to help your endangered wolves!”

The best to your organization and the wolves we all hold so dearly.

Our state has also been devastated, with wolf hunting by airplanes…all thanks to our past Governor Sarah Palin, who by the way now has her own nature show on TV, what is not right about that scenario???

in a world where all creatures are vulnerable and at risk, is it not our responsibility to become more vigilant in our ability to deter both their extinction and also the problems which arise because of their “natural” living instinct? We are the ones with minds.. dont kill, restrict perhaps but dont kill!

Nature will not survive when man takes it upon himself to eradicate selected species. Without the apex (predatory) animals, disease and catastrophe ensues. Please understand, the wolf has an important role in biodiversity. I implore you to stop this senseless slaughter. There are other ways to protect livestock that slaughter of this wonderful animal. The wolf has his role on this earth. It is not our right to remove him from his place.

Each Country and Each Person has a responsibility in our role as Protector and Keeper of Balance of this wonderful planet Earth.

I’m so angry I want to participate in hunting hunters season! Hunting is such a dangerous mindset that needs to be eradicated. I’m sick of people not caring about the protection of wildlife other than that of the human kind. This planet is not ours. We are ALL temporary visitors. All those religions that advocate animal kind as being at the bottom of the food chain at our disposal I remind: what people fantasise about achieving as being pure and perfect, other species are already there killing prey only to live not for pleasure. STOP KILLING INNOCENT LIFE!!

  32. The wolf population was there long before the humans came to Scandinavia and Finland. The wolves were here first. Then, eventually wolves and humans became friends; they both were hunters and joined their skills. Ever since the wolf was man’s companion and their life evolved towards a domestic status; the wolf became man’s best friend as dog.

We have no right to erase wild species, whether it is the wolf, bear, lynx, fox etc. But today, due to relentless legal and illegal hunting the wolf is the most endangered one. We have to stop this madness and let them live as one of our greatest species.

  33. Judy L. Holm sanoo:

Again I say, mankind is such a small intity and small of mind that all they can do is kill what they can’t control. The wolf is everything a human should be. Please do not destroy one of the most beautiful creatures, in every way, that God created.

I’m shock and appalled at what is happing to endangered and iconic species in Finland. The attitude towards them in many parts of the country is like something from the dark ages. Finland is meant to be a first world country yet there appears to be appalling ignorance in regards to wolves in particular. If other countries that host species like Tigers and Lions adopted this backward attitude both would already be Extinct. My adivice to Finland don’t let a small bunch of Red-necks deceide your wildlife policy like what is happening in the US atm!!

I can’t believe that this sort of thing is still going on after Wolves have been all but wiped out by man in Europe. Centuries of supersition and habitat loss have led to these beautiful wild animals being trapped, shot (maybe maimed and dying later) and killed by some other horric means. Then, of course, no predators and people will have to turn their imagination to killing all the prey. People are much more likely to be killed by some human hand or mechanisation, why can’t the people have wildlife and try to live in harmony. People in Finland…don’t let your wildlife be wiped out and only kept in zoos and fur farms, you will regret it when you don’t have the benefit of these awe inspiring animals to watch and not be able to feel at one with nature any more.

  39. Rachel sanoo:

For the wolves x May we stand up for what’s right and defend these magnificent creatures so they may live on

  40. Nicola Williscroft sanoo:

This should be stopped and hopefully will soon, this beautiful species needs to be saved and should be respected!
